Q:

How much does the EXTURN bow and stern thruster slow my boat down?

A:

When optimal positioned on the outermost spot of the hull, EXTURN affects the boat speed minimal. It is fluidically optimized and due to its positioning slows lesser than conventional bow thrusters with transverse tunnel inside the hull, because the current doesn’t stall directly along the hull and generates less turbulences. EXTURN’s extremely short transverse tunnel guarantees minimal water resistance as well. Within a testing environment, depending on the positioning, the loss of speed differs between 0,1 and 0,2 knots at a reference speed of 9 knots, which is comparable to a folding propeller. On motorboats (glider, half glider), when correctly positioned as bow thruster, EXTURN is located outside the water during drive and therefore doesn’t slow at all.

Q:

What happens during grounding?

A:

EXTURN has a diameter of merely 165 mm and normally is not mounted at the lowest point of the boat. It consists of aluminium and therefore is more stable than the boat hull. Due to its shape obstacles will slide down. Additionally the pressure-tight sealing serves as a crush zone during slight grounding and prevents crazing.

Q:

How is the sealing of EXTURN ensured?

A:

The stud bolt is supplied with a special pressure-tight sealing which closes the drilled hole automatically and permanently. This special pressure-tight sealing is certified by the TU Munich and, if correctly installed, is still fully functional after 15 years.

Q:

How complex is the mounting of EXTURN?

A:

The effort to install EXTURN is minimal and usually takes only about 1-2 hours for the thruster itself (without cable run). It is necessary to drill a hole of 50 mm in diameter through the hull for the threaded bolt which is designed as a hollow shaft and serves as the cable run. The included mounting kit is fixed with screws including pressure-tight sealings. Finally the cable has to be laid inside the boat interior and the control panel has to be attached.

Q:

How do I run a 24V EXTURN with an on-board voltage of 12V?

A:

The series connection of two 12V batteries (same voltage, same capacity) results in a voltage of 24V. Thereby the capacities of the batteries don‘t change. To load such a battery bank there are different possibilities (e.g. with a 24V battery charger connected to the power supply connection off-board, a 12V/24V voltage converter (DC/DC), an additional 24V electric generator and charge controller, or battery-to-battery recharger). MARINNO recommends the use of a 12V/24V charger and voltage converter (DC/DC) from WAECO, which was tested by MARINNO accordingly and is available as accessory.

Q:

How are fuse and wire cross section have to be dimensioned for EXTURN?

A:

The battery main switch for EXTURN 130 to EXTURN 300 has to be dimensioned for 12V/24V DC - 250A permanent load. Fuse and wire cross section have to be dimensioned according to the following table:

Model
.
Fuse (NH00)

Cross Section 0 - 8 m*

Cross Section 8 - 16 m*

* Wire length is the sum of + and - wire.
** The several models have been optimized for a runtime of 10 minutes without charging.

Q:

What is the runtime of EXTURN?

A:

The shift of the motor to the outside and the water cooling provide EXTURN with a much longer runtime per hour than conventional thruster systems. Depending on water temperature the continuous runtime is 3 - 5 minutes, automated shutdown when overheating prevents damage. After required short cooling intermissions the runtime of EXTURN is up to 25 minutes per hour!

Q:

What does EXTURN consist of and how can fouling be prevented?

A:

The housing of EXTURN consists of seawater-resistant special treated aluminium. To prevent fouling it is recommended to apply a coating of antifouling. Therefore use an appropriate aluminium primer and then the according antifouling.

Q:

How do I prevent redox reaction between EXTURN and the boat hull?

A:

EXTURN consists of seawater-resistant special treated aluminium and doesn‘t have any sacrifi cial anodes. Therefore it is absolutely necessary to perform a potential equalization and assure that there is no direct contact between EXTURN and boat hulls out of steel or aluminium. Detailed information is provided in the installation and operation manual.

Q:

How is it prevented that something entangles itself between EXTURN and the boat hull?

A:

The Adapter mounting kit completely fi lls out the space between EXTURN and boat hull and due to its shape makes entanglement between EXTURN and boat hull impossible.

Q:

Does EXTURN need maintenance?

A:

EXTURN is a closed system and absolutely maintenance-free. In order to avoid fouling, it is recommended to apply a coating of antifouling.

Q:

Can I connect EXTURN to the power supply of an anchor windlass?

A:

This depends on the cable size and power of the anchor windlass and has to be verified by a specialist.
